New York has passed (read: quickly rushed through the legislature without time for proper discussion and debate) stricter gun control laws.
The new laws ban the expected mostly arbitrary things such as AR-15s (because they are scary) and high capacity magazines since having to switching magazines would prevent shootings.
The law also mandates that mental health professionals report suicidal and homicidal thoughts expressed by their patients to authorities. While this sounds like an excellent idea more than likely it will result in patients not sharing such information and likely exacerbating mental health issues as treatment is no longer as likely.
Hopefully they have put aside some money to actually enforce these new laws. More than likely, this new round of laws will lead to an increase in crime and eventually another round of calls for yet more unenforced gun restrictions.
Good luck to the residents of New York. You’re going to need it.
